Race Instructions

Code Blue 2022

Verify your race packet contains:

  1. Team number and safety pins to be attached to one team member’s clothing or pack.  Team number must be with that team member at all times. 

  2. Master map of race course

  3. Passport

Definitions:

TA - Transition Area

CP - Orienteering Checkpoint to obtained on foot

BCP - Biking Checkpoint to be obtained while biking

Code - The  letters in the code column will be found on that CPs braille punch. It is used to confirm you are at the

            right location.

Clue Column - If the clue column contains a question, there is not a flag at that location. Instead, write down the 

answer to that question on your passport to receive credit.

Race Headquarters:

Race HQ is at Bethel Horizons Camp and Retreat Center, 4651 Co Rd ZZ, Dodgeville, WI 53533. Signs will be posted to direct you to the correct parking area.

Race Day Check In:

Each participant must print, complete and sign a USARA waiver before arriving at race check in. One team member will exchange their team’s waivers for their race packets (maps, race instructions, passports and bib number) and swag bag during their check in.  Remember: waivers will not be available at check in.

Day of race timeline

Transport to Race Start at Blackhawk Recreation Area:

  1. 6:00 am - Teams to load on bus

  2. 6:15 am - Bus leaves Bethel Horizons

  3. 6:45 am - Bus arrives at Blackhawk Rec Area

  4. 7:00 am - Race start 

RACE START:

Teams should be race ready when exiting the bus.  Race ready means packs on and ready to start the race.  Race will start promptly at 7:00 am.

1. Opening Event: Mystery Challenge

2. Blackhawk Navigation:   4-8 miles

  • CPs are to be obtained by foot in any order.

  • It is mandatory for teams to obtain 1 CP to remain ranked.

  • When teams arrive at TA 1 check in with race staff to verify time into TA and turn in passport with the number of CPs obtained. 

  • Teams should plan on getting to TA 1 by 10 am

  • Teams do not need to check out with race staff when leaving TA 1.

3. Bike to TA 2:     15-24 miles

  • BCPs 1-8 are to be obtained by bike in any order.

  • It is mandatory for teams to obtain 1 BCP to remain ranked.

  • When teams arrive at TA 2 check in with race staff to verify time into TA and the answers of BCPs to receive CP credit.

4. TA 2 Gov. Dodge Land Nav:   8 miles

  • Teams will receive the navigation section map and new passport at TA 2 check in after completing the bike section.

  • CPs are to be obtained by foot in any order.

  • It is mandatory for teams to obtain 1 CP to remain ranked.

  • When teams return to TA2 check in with race staff to verify time into TA and the number of CPs obtained.

  • Teams do not need to check out with race staff when leaving TA 2 for optional navigation map or heading back to HQ.

  • If teams are skipping the optional Compass Nav section and returning to HQ, they will need to turn in their passport to race staff prior to leaving TA 2.
